We love the holidays because of the time we get to spend with our friends and loved ones – we even find ourselves traveling across the country to visit our families. Anyone that has seen the movie Home Alone knows that criminals like The Wet Bandits prey upon homes they know will be empty. If you are one of the many families that will be traveling this holiday season, The Daniel and Henry Company have some helpful tips that will keep your home safe while you are away.
Lock up your home – This might sound like a no-brainer, but double and triple-check all doors and windows before you hit the road. Consider reinforcing sliding doors with metal rods and close all of your blinds.
Notify your neighbors – If you are going to leave your home vacant for more than a night or two, tell your friends and neighbors. Any activity at your home will then be considered suspicious. Also, ask someone you trust to check in occasionally to make sure that everything is as it should be.
Light the night – To deter potential criminals, keep your home’s exterior well lit. If you do not have motion detector lights, consider leaving your external lights on throughout the duration of your travels.
The more difficult you make it for an intruder to gain access to your home, the less likely they will try to pursue access. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee safety while away – that is why companies like The Daniel and Henry Company offer our clients homeowner, condominium and renters insurance.
